Why do we go to concerts?
Recently I went to a concert and during the pre-show, I was wondering, what are we looking for when we attend this event? I was sure it was not about a listening experience or comfort, as the old argument says, both would be much better at home with a good pair of headphones. For a moment I believed it was about the artist, seeing them in person would mean a step in this parasocial relation, but that would mean if you are already close to them or already attended before, it wouldn’t make much sense to go. The actual argument I thought was “Would it be as exciting if it was a private show just for me?” and the answer was a hard no, I wouldn’t scream the lyrics or jump during the chorus as it wouldn’t feel the same and be cringe as hell. So, my conclusion is that we go to meet with other people and vibe with them, the music is just a common denominator. We like it because we are surrounded by people just like us, singing and dancing to the same songs by the artist we love who happens to be there too.
What I learned this week
Prisma “support” for serverless sucks. As databases require long-lived connections, their workaround was to host the connection (it’s a separate service) and let you talk to it via HTTP. You (I) are (am) literally going to use a proxy to talk to your (my) database, and that’s stupid.
Neri Oxman is the woman behind Oxman, a design company that uses natural structures and patterns to build their projects, she recently was on the Lex Friedman podcast. I first saw Oxman’s projects in this video by Dami Lee and it was good to see who’s responsible for the vision. I love the idea and hope for a Solarpunk future.
